Jim Carson: Nearly a Decade of Independent Music, Reinvention and Evolution

From house music roots to euphoric trance and hypnotic techno, Jim Carson’s journey as an independent artist and label owner has been defined by experimentation, resilience and an enduring commitment to the music.

In February 2027, Anahata Love Recordings will celebrate its tenth anniversary. Its sister label, Cola & Lollipops, is approaching seven years of releases in 2026. Together, they represent nearly a decade of independent music, artistic exploration and the determination to build something lasting outside the traditional structures of the music industry.

But the story behind these labels is about more than release dates and musical milestones. It is a story of changing direction, exploring life beyond the dance floor and returning to music with an ever-expanding creative vision.

Where it began: House music and independent spirit

Founded on February 14, 2017, Anahata Love Recordings emerged from a love of electronic music that prioritised groove, melody and emotional connection. In its early years, the label was predominantly focused on house music, exploring funky house, progressive house, deep house and other groove-driven styles.

These were the foundations of Carson’s identity as an independent label owner: a willingness to explore different sounds, champion underground dance music and develop a catalog that reflected his own musical instincts rather than conforming to a single formula.

That same independent spirit would eventually lead to the creation of Cola & Lollipops, a label with a distinctly playful personality and a strong connection to funky house, nu disco and feel-good dance-floor energy. While the two labels developed their own identities, both reflected different sides of Carson’s eclectic approach to electronic music.

Then, just as the labels were establishing their place in his creative life, the world changed.

Beyond the dance floor: An unexpected chapter

The global pandemic of 2020 brought much of the nightlife industry to a standstill. Bars and clubs closed, performances became uncertain, and the regular rhythm of DJ life was replaced by a very different reality.

For much of 2020 and 2021, Carson stepped away from his usual music activities, playing only occasional DJ gigs when bars and clubs were allowed to operate. Rather than maintaining the same pace of releases and performances, he explored entirely different professional paths.

He worked as an English teacher and took on a full-time position as a matchmaker for one of the biggest matchmaking companies in America. Both experiences placed him in worlds far removed from music production and nightlife, requiring different skills, perspectives and ways of connecting with people.

It was a significant detour, but also an important part of a life that has never been defined by music alone. The experience of stepping outside the familiar world of DJing and label management added another dimension to Carson’s story, even as the future of the music industry remained uncertain.

As the world gradually reopened, so did the possibilities for returning to music.

A return with a broader musical vision

The artist who continued developing his catalog in the years that followed was no longer interested in remaining within the boundaries of a single genre.

While house music remained part of his musical DNA, Carson increasingly explored the emotional scale of euphoric and progressive trance, the hypnotic intensity of melodic techno, and the harder, rawer textures of underground electronic music.

His later projects, including Space Odyssey, Hyperspace and the Trance Utopia Sessions series, reflect this expanding vision. Driving rhythms and powerful synths sit alongside atmospheric passages, emotional melodies and extended breakdowns designed to take listeners on a journey rather than simply deliver a drop.

The contrast between euphoria and intensity has become an important part of this direction. There is room for both the uplifting and the hypnotic, the beautiful and the uncompromising.

This evolution has also been accompanied by a more developed production approach, with increasingly ambitious sound design, layered synthesizers and a focus on creating a cohesive sonic identity across releases.

The goal is not simply to make music that fits a particular genre, but to explore how different sounds and emotions can work together.

The journey from house music to trance and techno is therefore less a departure from the original vision than an expansion of it.

The Mind Behind the Music: Hypnotherapy, Focus and Creative Breakthrough

Long before Anahata Love Recordings began building its catalog, Jim Carson had developed another area of expertise: hypnotherapy.

With professional training in hypnotherapy and experience working with clients, Carson developed an understanding of how the mind, concentration, motivation and deeply held patterns of behaviour can influence a person’s ability to perform.

Eventually, he began applying those principles to his own creative life.

As a music producer, he had ideas, musical instincts and the desire to make records. The challenge was turning those ideas into finished productions, consistently and to a standard he was proud of.

His breakthrough came when he began using self-hypnosis, drawing on the techniques and understanding he had developed through his work with clients.

Rather than treating music production as a struggle against distraction, indecision or unfinished ideas, he began approaching it with a more deliberate sense of focus and direction.

The results were transformative for his workflow. By using self-hypnosis to help direct his attention and engage more fully with the creative process, Carson found himself able to write, develop and finish complete house music productions from start to finish in a single productive session.

On particularly productive days, he could complete three or four tracks, and occasionally as many as five.

This wasn’t simply about working faster. It was about learning how to sustain creative momentum, make decisions and carry an idea through to completion rather than continually revisiting unfinished projects.

The experience became a defining part of his development as a producer and independent label owner. It helped him turn his musical ideas into finished records and gave him a repeatable approach to working in the studio.

His early releases, subsequent distribution opportunities and Beatport chart achievements became milestones in a journey that had begun with a personal challenge: learning how to bring the music in his head into the world.

For Carson, hypnotherapy and music production were no longer separate disciplines. His understanding of the mind had become part of his creative practice.

Hypnosis didn’t create his musical talent or replace the craft of production. It helped him access his concentration, motivation and creativity more effectively, allowing him to apply his existing abilities with greater consistency.

That combination of technical learning, musical instinct and mental focus became one of the foundations on which he continued building Anahata Love Recordings and, later, Cola & Lollipops.

It is also an important part of understanding his wider approach to creativity: the belief that developing the mind can be just as meaningful as developing the tools, techniques and skills used to make the music.

Two labels, different identities, one independent vision

Throughout this evolution, Anahata Love Recordings and Cola & Lollipops have provided distinct outlets for Carson’s creative interests.

Anahata Love Recordings has grown beyond its house music beginnings into a broader home for electronic music, including trance, progressive sounds and harder, hypnotic styles.

As the label approaches its tenth anniversary, its history reflects the changing musical interests of its founder and the freedom that comes with running an independent operation.

Cola & Lollipops, meanwhile, retains its own playful, groove-led identity, celebrating the funk, energy and personality of house music. Its approaching seventh anniversary marks another milestone in Carson’s work building a catalog and maintaining a presence in the independent dance music landscape.

Running two labels involves far more than making records. It requires balancing production with curation, release planning, distribution, artwork, promotion and the countless practical decisions behind every release.

It is a continuing exercise in creative direction and independent entrepreneurship.

Yet the central motivation remains the same: to put music into the world that reflects a genuine artistic point of view.

Nearly ten years on, the journey continues

Looking back toward Anahata Love Recordings’ tenth anniversary, the most striking aspect of Carson’s journey is not simply how much the music has changed, but how many different chapters have contributed to the artist he is today.

The house music foundations of 2017, the unexpected professional detour of 2020 and 2021, the continuing development of Cola & Lollipops, and the increasingly expansive sound of his recent trance and techno projects all form part of the same story.

There has been no perfectly straight line from one milestone to the next. Instead, the journey has involved experimentation, pauses, reinvention and a willingness to explore different directions without abandoning the creative impulse that started it all.

As Anahata Love Recordings approaches ten years and Cola & Lollipops approaches seven, Carson is continuing to build on that foundation, bringing together the experience of an independent label owner with the curiosity of an artist who still wants to discover what comes next.

The grooves that inspired the beginning remain part of the story. The sounds have evolved, the horizons have widened, and the possibilities continue to expand.

Nearly a decade of independent music. Two distinct label identities. One continuing journey of creative evolution.
