There is something especially meaningful about watching Dean P & Jim Carson’s “Halcyon” climb from #9 on Beatport’s Top 10 Trance (Main Floor) Releases last Friday to #1 today — holding the #1 position for the second consecutive day. There was no major-label machine behind this release, no venture-capital investment, no giant promotional budget, no club-night takeover and no army of promoters pushing it into the spotlight. This one has been a grassroots climb — one listener, one DJ, one download, one share and one fan at a time.
It is electronic dance music in its simplest and most beautiful form: people discovering a record, connecting with it, and supporting it because they genuinely love the music.
And that makes the achievement particularly significant for Anahata Love Recordings, the independent label founded by California native Jim Carson on February 14, 2017. The label’s own history describes its roots as stretching between Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bali and Thailand, with the imprint initially built around house music, progressive, deep, tribal and soulful sounds. Today, the catalog has expanded across trance, techno, melodic house & techno, psy-trance and other forms of electronic music; Beatport currently lists more than 200 releases associated with the imprint, including the recent Trance Utopia Sessions projects.
From a personal journey to a record label
For Jim, Anahata Love Recordings was never simply a business venture. It grew out of a deeply personal journey.
After traveling through Southeast Asia, Bali and Thailand — including time teaching yoga in Bali — Jim returned to California following an extended period of exploration and what he describes as something of a personal “gap year.”
He had completed graduate-level training in hypnotherapy at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, California, and credits his work with self-hypnosis with helping him overcome the mental blocks that had previously kept him from completing full music productions.
The transformation was gradual: learning to finish tracks, learning production, releasing music independently and eventually finding distribution. What began with music being released through platforms such as Bandcamp eventually developed into a professional catalog distributed to major digital stores.
The journey can now be seen in the catalog itself. Jim’s music and the labels’ releases have appeared in Beatport’s charts across genres including Funky House, Progressive House, Nu Disco, Afro House, Tech House, Electro and other electronic categories, while the labels’ catalog has continued expanding internationally. Beatport’s current artist and label pages document Jim Carson’s extensive catalog and his releases across both Anahata Love Recordings and Cola & Lollipops.
“Halcyon” represents another chapter in that journey — and, to our knowledge, this is Anahata Love Recordings’ first #1 release in both the Beatport Trance Top 10 and Top 100 Trance charts.
